The Baths of Nero
The Baths of Nero are an archaeological site in the center of Pisa, located near Porta a Lucca, a short distance from the Piazza del Duomo. It is the only monument of Roman Pisa that is still emerging, a Roman thermal building, improperly called "Nero's" starting from the Middle Ages, considering it part of one of his phantom palace. The Roman baths of the first century. a.D., or Bagni di Nerone, were a very large complex of structures, where the population went almost every day for hygienic reasons. The baths were fed by the Roman aqueduct of Caldaccoli, from the 1st century A.D., today only partially visible near San Giuliano Terme, from where its journey began. Nero's involvement in the construction of the baths could not have happened, because the spa complex was dated to the last twenty years of the 1st century AD, therefore almost 20 years after the emperor's death.
The laconicum was made up of an octagonal apsidal room with a partially restored perforated dome cover. The remains of the walls of the gym are also visible, a space for gymnastic exercises surrounded by service areas for equipment and rooms for conferences and libraries.
Also visible are the remains of the apodyterium, the main vestibule for entry and exit to public toilets, consisting of a large dressing room with wooden or masonry booths or shelves, and sometimes simple niches in the walls, where citizens stored their clothes and other personal items during their stay in the spa and only two walls of the tepidarium intended for baths in lukewarm water.
Further environments can be recognized, such as the destrictarium, the room for frictions where slaves could rub the skin with perfumed oils, paved with slabs of ammonite limestone from the Pisan Mountains.
The building must have been covered with marble, of which many pieces have been found and decorated with some sculptures, partly found.
Archaeological excavations in the area began in 1881 by the paleographer and archaeologist Clemente Lupi. The works continued only in 1938, some houses were demolished around, and the area was fenced off to protect the remains. Excavations resumed from 1943 to 1949, and the complex was restored.
In 2007 the covering dome was replaced due to the damage caused by atmospheric agents.
In the summer of 2017, new excavations were carried out to better understand the thermal environments, investigating above all the ground between the thermal baths and the walls, discovering further Roman walls and the remains of the Gabella house leaning against the walls at the Parlascio gate which introduced both to the religious center (Piazza del Duomo), and to the political center (Piazza delle Sette Vie) of the city.
